My students need bouncy ball chairs to calm themselves, planters and soil to grow their own flowers, Lego kits to engineer imaginative creations and art supplies to express how they feel about what they've learned.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a Title I school which integrates students with intellectual disabilities with their able bodied peers. About half of our population have special needs. More than 90% of our school qualifies for free or reduced lunch. My students are in third, fourth, and fifth grade and are diagnosed with Intellectual Disabilities. They learn in a self-contained class. They have difficulties with sitting still, staying on-task, and fine motor skills.
I want to start the new year right focusing on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) by emphasizing building with Legos, gardening, simple computer coding, and artistic projects displaying what the students created.
My class needs two bouncy ball chairs to strengthen core body strength and to act as a calming agent, new Duplo Lego blocks, a vertical garden, and art supplies for special projects.
My Project
These chairs, planters, and art supplies will involve my children with special needs in hands-on projects in Science, Engineering, and Art. They will have special chairs to help them calm down and focus on learning as needed.
Engineering, gardening, and Art supplies will allow my students hands-on learning which will increase retention and enthusiasm in our class.
Lego kits will help them read and follow directions to complete a project independently. Planters will allow them to watch something grow and be responsible for it. The art supplies will allow them to create new items from old as well as make their own masterpieces to show how they feel about what they've learned.
