This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school exhibited a replica of our city hall for the National Lego Convention in our area. It was also exhibited citywide as part of our community art work and district art exhibit.
My students are from all over the globe.
I work in a high poverty urban community where more than 75% of my students are English language learners and English is their second language.
I have had students from as far away as Tibet, Russia, and Japan.
My Project
I would like to use Legos to create twenty world flags which will be used for a social studies based art project for a family outreach event. The flags will also be displayed in other school buildings during Youth Art Month in April of 2015. They will be permanently displayed in our elementary school after the district wide art show.
My students all love Legos but they are very expensive to buy in bulk.
I have gotten some donations from friends and at yard sales, but I do not have enough for students to use unless they take apart their designs after each art class. I would like this project to introduce students to Legos as a sculptural tool as well as create a community of school respect for our students' diverse heritages.
