This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am so thrilled to be a high school social worker in CPS. I primarily work with students who have disabilities. Together, and with families and school staff, we problem solve to set my students up for success.
Recently, I received a LEGO set of flowers as a birthday gift from a friend; I brought the set to school to see if my students would be interested in putting it together, and several of them really were!
In my social work office, I have a table that I use to work with students during our individual and group sessions. On the first day I brought in the set, I left it out on this table for any student who might be interested. Within one day, three of my students opted to work with this LEGO set.
I find that my students are more open to engaging in social work sessions when they have some sort of fidget around. I have a tray of fidgets that almost all of my students utilize during social work sessions. I would like to offer LEGO sets as another form of fidgets to any student who are interested.
I have requested several small to medium-sized sets for my students to use during our sesssions. For many of my students, the social work office serves as a quiet place to get away from the stressors of high school. LEGO sets are a calming activity that even high schoolers enjoy!
