My Students

It's a law of nature: all students, especially STEAM students (science, technology, engineering, art, and math), love to create the imaginary, the possible, and the near-impossible. Behold: the Lego Robotics for All Hands Project!

This engineering project aims to place advanced, Lego robotics kits into the young, articulate hands of our creatively-advanced students.

Plenty of students already perform these projects at home; they are also perfect for school! Why choose these Lego kits? Because they, like our talented students, perform better when the creative environment encourages highly-flexible possibilities.

Our science students love to do it themselves; as a teacher, I can do the building first, but really, they prefer to make the first mistakes. This way, students learn, from direct experience, how the official Lego blueprints are faulty, and how students, as engineers, may improve on these designs. I must confess: my Lego students are plucky, wily, determined, resourceful, opinionated, and brimming with enthusiasm. Whew!

Do I think this robot project is vital for our STEAM students in grades 1 through 4? You bet your sprockets I do!

My Project

Just like our advanced students, all of the materials for this project, by themselves, in isolation, don't achieve much. When students or robot parts are connected, however, everything comes alive with creativity!

Using our classroom Kindle tablets, our gifted students will create motorized Lego projects that require programmed coding to give them direction, speed, and purpose.

This project is intended to be the foundation of a future Lego Competition Club to compete in the yearly, local Lego Robotics qualifier.

The sky is the veritable limit to what our students can create with these kits: robots of all purposes, construction machines, trash compactors, geared automatons, the works! The key thing is, each student may choose a particular STEAM role: programmer, planner, designer, builder, troubleshooter. Ready? We are!
