Do you remember playing with Lego's as a child? I know I do! As a hands-on classroom teacher, I want to bring the mathematical concepts of problem solving, planning, organizing thoughts, and developing the skills of explaining multistep concepts to life using Lego's.
We are a Title I school where 100% of my scholars have the benefit of receiving a free breakfast and lunch each day.
My scholars are eager to learn and want to understand concepts and become easily frustrated when they struggle. As fifth graders, they are new to the middle school environment and while it is an exciting time, it can also be very intimidating for them. I have found that enjoyable, hands-on experiences in math help to ease their stress and show them that math is fun, even in middle school!
My Project
My scholars will love learning with Lego's! Imagine learning fractions, area, perimeter, place value, multiplication, and so much more using Lego's! The familiar feel of the Lego's will bring math concepts to life while taking away any fear that my scholars may have of math.
Beyond the basic math skills that we must cover in our curriculum, we will work on the very difficult skills of problem solving as well as high level critical thought through fun Lego activities. They will create and build while developing the spatial ability to see and think in three dimensions. The Lego's will spark their creativity and allow them to experience planning and organizing thoughts through the construction of their pieces.
All donations made to this project will improve the overall quality of my teaching and my scholar's learning.
It will provide materials that can spark creative thought and show how math is everywhere, even during play! The Lego's will provide an outlet for students with an aptitude for constructing and will be particularly appealing to those with attention deficit disabilities.
