Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Everyday we work towards 100... We count to 100, we play to 100, we dance to 100; most importantly, we work towards 100 % participation and engagement in math activities.

I get the pleasure of playing and learning with 22 smart, energetic, and outgoing five and six year olds who love to come to school.

My students come from various communities throughout the city. 100% of my classroom receives free or reduced lunch and participate in the summer meals program as well as the free breakfast program. Many of my students also receive specialized services from speech pathologists, special education teachers, social workers, and occupational therapists.

My Project

My super stars love to laugh, play, and learn. The legos and math games will help keep them invested in math concepts such algebra, geometry, and scientific data (measurement, weight, etc.). The students need manipulatives that will make math learning a bit more engaging. We will be using the math games during math centers throughout the week. The legos will take on a life of their own in our room! Between using them to make patterns, counting towers, and weighing to spot differences we will also use them during free play on Fun Fridays. Legos in a kindergarten classroom are rock stars we so desperately want to meet!

Math concepts like addition, subtraction, patterning, and skip counting are difficult concepts for kindergarten students.

The legos and math games will help my students visually and kinesthetically understand these concepts because they present students with hands on practice. Counting to 100 can sometimes be difficult... but counting 100 legos and then making a large tower is awesome!
