Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are interested in the world around them. They are kids with a keen interest in learning new things. They love to explore, write, build and read. As the ELD teacher for kindergarten and first grade, I spend my time pushing into classrooms to teach English language learners. We are about to go 100% in person and it's going to be tight quarters in our small classrooms.
My students come from impoverished backgrounds, but they also have strong family ties and parents who want the best for them.
Our school is very large and with the latest state budget cuts, our class will be much larger than normal. This won't stop us from becoming a school family looking out for each other and learning everything we can in these first pivotal years of school.
My Project
These Legos will bring a variety of learning to life. The emotion Legos are for our safe space. Kids who are learning English are used to pointing to a poster to explain their feelings. It will be so nice to be able to build the emotion and learn to talk about their feelings more. Story time legos are great for creating text to self connections and lets face it, Legos are just plain fun. These activities will be used in conjunction with very real Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing skills. Our students have learning gaps due to the pandemic. Part of being able to fill them includes using hands on concrete examples to retell stories and explain what they know. Students are also at their most creative when given an open ended project.
