Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are young mathematicians. They are building their confidence in algebraic reasoning, as I teach them that math is about creativity and patterns and that everyone can learn math to high levels. Collaboration is essential in our classroom. Many of my students are new to the country and learning English. Some have limited experience in a formal academic setting. They love working together in groups on hands-on activities! They share an excitement for learning and we celebrate their discoveries and successes as a class community.
My Project
These LEGO sets will help my students to develop proportional and algebraic reasoning skills that they will need to be successful in high school and college level mathematics. Working in groups, they will build fraction, ratio, and percent models, exploring the concept of equivalency as the size of the whole changes. They will build growing patterns using various colors and shapes, exploring the concepts of linear, quadratic, and exponential growth. The visual and hands-on learning will help my students make new connections to numbers and quantities, and they will learn to think of mathematics as a subject of creativity and exploration.
