My students need Lego MoreToMath and StoryStarter sets to help us build PLAY into our learning. Students who play as they learn are more likely to succeed.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Lego Learning is one of the favorite things my students do in class. I am looking for ways to expand their ability to play while they learn. Legos MoreToMath and their StoryStarter kits will help my students build their Math and Language Arts skills while they play with the Legos.
My students come from a low income school.
Many of them do not have access to Legos outside of school. In a time where students are set in front of a computer or television when they get home, exposing them to hands on creative resources while they are at school is even more important. My students are very inquisitive and using Legos to build and rebuild will help them to understand the world around them.
My Project
My students will use the Lego StoryStarter kit and software to create their own digital stories that they can share with their friends and family. We will use the MoreToMath kit to explore this new curriculum that helps them understand mathematical processes and encourages them to persevere and keep trying in Math. These kits are just the starters, but will allow me to begin working with small groups of students until we are able to receive funding for further resources.
The donation of the Lego StoryStarter and MoreToMath kit will allow my students to play while learning.
They will be able to build hands on representations of stories and math problems to help them have concrete ways of showing their understanding. Using Legos in the classroom helps students to not only be creative, but also helps them learn how to share, follow rules, wait for gratification, and work on their fine motor skills. Play is an important part of elementary learning.
