This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is my first year teaching second grade in a school with a 97% free lunch population. I have opened up extra help sessions to my students Monday through Thursdays before school. Many of my students are immigrants or first generation Americans with difficulties in language. They are highly motivated to learn and our class attendance is high.
Recently, I have introduced my students to puzzles and was shocked to find the basic ability to find common skills in matching parts that fit. After interviewing my students on the types of games they play at home I discovered that few have puzzles and none have blocks or Legos. Legos are also wonderful in that they have themes that are aligned with topics we are discussing in social studies, namely communities. Legos teaches students about constructive learning, problem solving, spacial relationships, math, and numerous other life skills.
I think my students would benefit from basic Lego building blocks and, specifically, their community workers and vehicles so that students can role play to discover the importance of the various workers that make up a community.
With your donation of Lego building blocks, you can help my students build a future as they build and create their own cities and communities in shiny plastic.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
