Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

LOES serves a primarily Hispanic population of students within an urban area of Spartanburg, SC. This location used to be a prosperous mill industry area -- and now is suffering from the loss of those industries in our region.

Students who attend our school are often transient, lower socio-economic status, take advantage of the free extended day program, and receive free and reduced lunch at a high rate.

parental involvement, partially due to the language barrier and parental work obligations, is low. Our school lacks a boisterous PTO or a full-time interpreter to bridge these gaps and let us better serve our students.

Providing our students with more hands-on experiences, especially with literacy, would help drive student achievement at our school.

My Project

Students at LOES need more hands-on literacy opportunities to support our "English as a second language" students. As a school which serves a population of majority English Language learners with Spanish spoken at home, it is vital to enforce acquisition of new vocabulary.

Using the LEGO kits requested in the grant, our STEAM/STEM teacher will integrate literacy into her curriculum.

This will allow our students more application of vocabulary and opportunities to move their learning from the abstract to the concrete.

The kits will also provide more LEGO materials with which students can undertake STEAM and STEM engineering design challenges.
