This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A phrase we use often in our College Corner is "It's a marathon, not a sprint." Our students have been preparing for college since 9th grade. As 11th graders, their focus is on researching colleges to create their "best fit" list. These books are invaluable resources in accomplishing this goal.
We are a public charter school whose mission is to prepare students intellectually, emotionally, and socially to be successful to and through college.
My students came to us as 9th graders who were academically under-performing and unexposed. Since then, they've blossomed into intellectually curious and intrinsically motivated young people who understand the value of a college education.
My Project
"Colleges That Change Lives" is an important resource for my particular group of students because many of the schools featured in the book provide support systems that are similar to those available at our high school. In addition, it exposes students to colleges that are often overlooked because of their size and location. The "Fiske Guide to Colleges" is a comprehensive resource that will allow my students to cross-reference college preferences. Combined, these books will allow for more in-depth counseling sessions in which both parties are well-informed of why a school is a "best fit."
There are currently 70 students who share 3 copies of each of the books previously mentioned. Having a class set of each resource would allow each student to access the resources on a daily basis.
At our school, we believe that knowledge acquired by one student can change the trajectory of an entire family and community.
Our College Knowledge Research unit is an integral part of the process. We will graduate our first senior class in 2014, and with additional resources, we can continue our legacy of transforming families and communities one acceptance letter at a time!
