This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 17 wonderful students this year all with unique personalities and qualities. One of my students in particular this year is very unique in that he is blind. He is a very happy, warm-hearted, and caring student who makes the world around him a happier and brighter place! His personality truly lights up a room, and I couldn't be more proud of him and his accomplishments this year!

My Project

While my student is very intelligent and bright, he learns differently than a person who has vision and because of this, requires a lot of special materials that I unfortunately do not have access to in my classroom.

He needs books that he can touch and feel as well as ones that have braille as this is how he is learning to read.

I am also severely lacking in toys that he is able to use and make meaning of independently and without his vision. These materials would be used at school and at home so he can practice his braille letters and numbers as well as work on his fine motor skills. These materials would open a whole new world for my student and allow him access to a world that he is just starting to explore without vision.

My student also speaks Spanish as his first language, so not only is he learning braille, but he is learning English at the same time. He needs tactile materials in his hands so that he can relate what I am saying in English to Spanish as well as to make meaning out of concepts without the use of his vision. Because second language learners depend heavily on their use of sight and visuals when learning another language, he especially needs all the tactile tools he can get.
