My Students
The amazing students at my school live challenging lives, where factors of living and growing up in an inner city often prevents them from realizing their full potentials. As a special education teacher, I work with students who have additional barriers due to learning, health, emotional, and other disabilities. In our room, we work very hard to focus, and meet grade level expectations for reading, writing and math. My classroom is very small in comparison to general education rooms, but the students need a way to fidget and release excess stress and energy which may be a result of disabilities, a hard day, and or life circumstances.
My Project
With these specialty "chairs," students will be able to release energy in a manner where they also remain engaged and productive with learning. Students with whom I work are often given choices for releasing energy, such as fidget toys or small movement in the back of class. Sometimes walk breaks, which takes them out of the room, are necessary. These methods are helpful, but wiggle chairs would provide larger release of energy, while keeping them in a stationary area with less distractions to others. Flexible seating provides choice and an option find ways to stay on focus while academically advancing with curriculum.
