Learning With Technology

My students need a small netbook computer so they can access certain websites to prepare their research papers.

My Students

I teach in a title one elementary school in NYC. The majority of the families have minimal income and some are below poverty. Most of my students do not have a computer at home and therefore have no internet access to complete their research projects.

I am a speech teacher in a Title 1 elementary school, servicing students from grades K-5 with a focus on special ed.

It is unfortunate that the majority of my students come from poverty stricken homes. Some children don't even have homes, they live in shelters. The parent body in my school is extremely hard working; as they struggle to support their families on their meager incomes. The parents are eager to help their children but are often lacking the resources to do so.

My Project

By having access to a computer, students will have the opportunity to interact with digital media daily. The computer will allow students to access the Internet for research and online resources in various areas of the curriculum. Specific activities on the Netbook will be used for differentiation in reading and language. All students will benefit in that they will have the tools and education on the safe and appropriate use of this type technology. Not only will students learn how to use technology, they will use technology to learn.
