This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading is one of the most important skills that you can have. Some of the students coming into my classroom this year have yet to fully develop this skill. I would like to provide students with resources that will help them achieve higher reading comprehension and fluency through listening to and following along with books.

This school year I am teaching a group of 25 first grade, bilingual students.

Our school is located in a large urban school district in Illinois. We have both an elementary school and middle school located on our campus. The majority of our students receive free/reduced lunches. The students come from working class homes where both parents need to work. Many of our students do not have access to a variety of books outside of school or someone that can read to them.

My Project

Each week students have the opportunity to visit one of our centers including the listening center. We currently own just a few sets of books that students can read along to. With your generous donations I will be able to provide my students with a variety of books to listen to and follow along. We also need book bins and a junction box. The bins will serve as a way to keep the sets organized. With the junction box, more than one student will have the opportunity to listen to a book at once.

By having these resources available I will be able to give my non-readers the same learning opportunities as my readers.

These resources will help them achieve higher reading comprehension and fluency through listening to and following along with books.
