My Students
I have 8 students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills as well as communication and social skills.
We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.
We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, group time to work on academic skills and writing, story time to work on comprehension, math, science and art time where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and following picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social and communication skills.
My Project
My students love to learn and need a variety of tools and activities to understand basic concepts. They also love using magnets and exploring what magnets can and cannot pick up. There are a variety of magnetic activities that focus on academic skills as well as exploration and social skills. Magnetic activities in our classroom would enhance instruction and allow students to easily practice skills independently and in a small group.
My students need magnetic activities to work on understanding basic concepts, building independence and learning to work together.
We seek to build independence in our classroom by having activities that students are able to complete independently. The magnetic math and language arts activities are perfect ways that students can go to a section of the room and work independently on skills they have mastered. Those same activities can be used in small group or one on one learning for students who have not mastered those skills and need continued practice learning basic concepts.
The magnetic stacking activity is great for my students who are working on following directions and sequencing as they have to use the pictures and follow the picture directions. The Engineer a Coaster and Create A Path activities will allow for creativity, exploration and work on social skills as students will have to work together to create a final product that works. My students struggle with communication, playing with each other and working together and this is a highly engaging activity that will help my students work on these skills. The magnetic activities in this project will allow my students more practice learning basic skills, encourage social interaction and communication with each other and build up independent workers.
