My classroom consists of students who are in first, second, third, and fourth grades. It is a self-contained, low-incidence special education room. The individuals are diverse learners who have moderate to severe disabilities that include autism, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, and speech and language impairments. My students come from all over the city of Chicago, making the class rich with diversity and culture.
No matter the challenging situations and difficulties they face, my students continue to come to school happy and eager to learn; they are amazing!
We are a Chicago Public School and our district continues to face financial difficulties. Because of this, the school lacks funding to appropriately support our classroom and students. With a little help from Donors Choose, we can get tools to support, enhance, and facilitate learning in a productive way!
My Project
My students are diverse learners who have disabilities. They each have unique needs and learn at different levels. Because my classroom is so diverse, I need to have a large variety of learning materials so that all instructional levels are addressed. Additionally, the students have different preferred learning styles, so it is helpful to have activities that can address these different styles: kinesthetic, visual, auditory, tactile, etc. Lakeshore Learning is a fabulous resource for students with special needs. We have a few activities from Lakeshore, and my students love them.
The Lakeshore items are fun and engaging ways to help the students work towards achieving their academic goals.
The selected activities were chosen to specifically target my students' IEP (individualized education plan) goals. The early learning language activity boxes are hands-on activities that will reinforce concepts of categorizing, comparing, and classifying. The letter build activity center will not only help with letter identification, but with also constructing the letters in different ways. Nuts about counting, magnetic shape sorter, and the snap math centers will all target the mathematics learning goals that include: number and shape identification, counting, and sorting. I know these activities will not only help my students, but they will also be sources of enjoyment to them. Thank you for your consideration!
