Learning While Playing Math!!

My students need these materials added to their classroom's set of Math manipulatives.

Do you love to learn? Well I have a classroom of wonderful first graders varying in mathematical abilities who love to learn. I teach in a high-poverty community. Many of my students do not have the means necessary for hands-on learning experiences that can enhance their knowledge.

My students are concrete learners and learn best by doing. My students grasp the skill best by having the necessary materials to use at their desks as they follow along with me as I demonstrate a new concept. Unfortunately, I do not have enough learning tools to give my students the best learning experience possible. They love math and learning new skills. I am trying to teach my students how to add and subtract using cuisenaire rods. I only have one set to share with the class. Ideally, I would have one set for each student so that they could use the cuisenaire rods with me while I am teaching the concept. I am also trying to help them tell time with a Judy Clock that is broken. I love to watch my class when they have their own manipulatives to practice the skill we are learning. The inchworms, double sided counters and foam shapes will help with other lessons that are coming up this year. I also would love to use the number line to help them see how the numbers hop up and down.

The manipulatives I am requesting will allow my students the opportunity to have a hands-on learning experience. They will be able to have their own set of cuisenaire rods to help them make their own number sentences and see exactly how to reach an answer. They can even write their own number sentences using the rods. I am also requesting a teacher size Judy Clock so they can see clearly how to work with their own clocks. They can see how the hour hand moves just as the minute hand moves. The inchworms will aide in their measurement unit and give them a hands on experience with measuring. The double sided counters have numerous possibilities in Math! The large number line will help the children see how to hop backwards and forwards on a number line when you add and subtract. The foam Geometric Shapes will help them see the three dimensional shapes that we have been talking about all year. The manipulatives that I am requesting will enhance my students motivation to learn more. I would love to provide them with this opportunity.

Your help will ensure that my students are encouraged to solve problems that they face in the everyday world. They will have the skills necessary to deal with real-life situations such as telling time, understanding addition and subtraction number sentences, identifying geometric shapes, understanding measuring, seeing how a number line works and using counters to help with their own number sentences.
