I teach a self-contained, life skills based, special education class of middle school students. We have nine students of varying abilities. Students from outlying county schools are sent to our school in order to receive special education services tailored to their specific needs.
Many of my students are kinesthetic learners and are in constant motion as they work.
They enjoy being in school and work hard. They also love to learn new things. However, the current classroom configuration doesn't really provide for their need of movement while learning.
My Project
Last week I was sitting in a training in which I was required to sit in a student chair for two consecutive days. By the end of the training, I was having trouble focusing and was uncomfortable. Although I learned the material presented, I probably would have learned the material better if I had been less concerned about how uncomfortable I was. I came to realize that my students face that same challenge every day in my classroom.

Current research shows that people learn best when engaging multiple senses. Additionally, research demonstrates that having a strong core correlates with better health in many different areas (balance, back strength, stability, etc). In order to provide my students with the best possible chance at success, I would like to provide alternative seating options in my classroom. Each seating option allows for movement, which has been shown to increase learning. Additionally, most of the seating options also work to increase core strength and, as a result, overall health.
