Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am so lucky to teach a classroom of bright, vibrant, happy kindergarteners. My students rush at me the second I swing open the door to welcome them for another fun day of learning, which makes it tricky to shake their hands. Our school serves a low-income community where 98% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch assistance, and walking to school can be a scary ordeal given our inner-city setting. We just finished learning the alphabet and my students are really looking forward to begin writing! They have so many stories they want to write down. Kind donors generously provided a classroom set of journals for the students to begin their careers as excited learners and authors. Unfortunately, many of my students have not yet developed the hand strength necessary to grip a normal #2 pencil. So they have been staring longingly at the journals for weeks while growing frustrated with their unsuccessful attempts at holding a pencil. I can’t allow their first efforts at writing to end so sadly, or their excitement for school will dim. Due to California’s dire economic state, the district’s budget has negatively impacted our resources, so maintaining a high quality education without proper resources is even trickier than normal. How can my little kindergarteners learn to write without access to basic resources such as pencils? Grotto Grips are special pencil grips that guide and hold their little fingers into the correct grip. The occupational therapist-designed Grotto Grips will ensure that not only will each student be able to hold a pencil, but that she or he will learn an ergonomically-correct grip. Please help my little ones! They have been waiting to write down all their stories, the new words they learn each day, and to draw as all children should. Your help will be so greatly appreciated by them, and by me. Thank you for your consideration.
