My students need their own analog watch to learn basic time-telling skills in a digital world.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am the proud teacher of an amazing group of 3rd graders in a community school in Harlem, where more than three-quarters of students come from low-income households. My students are hard workers, enthusiastic and eager to become stronger readers and mathematicians.
My biggest challenge is that the majority of my students are significantly behind academically.
Over 70% are starting the school year reading below grade level; 40% are considered English Language Learners; and too many have not mastered second grade math learning standards.
I am committed to helping them reach their full potential! With your support I can meet my goal of 80% of my students making a year and a half growth in reading and reaching proficiency levels in this year's math and reading state exams.
My Project
This project will help me effectively teach the standard to my students of telling and writing times from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes using both a.m. and p.m. An analog watch on the wrist of each of my students will help them grasp time concepts throughout the school day. They will learn how to tell time and make personal connections by interpreting what a certain time means to them in the course of the school day. The watches will be worn during the school day and kept in the classroom when school is dismissed until the student becomes knowledgeable at telling time. In order to motivate my students to learn how to tell time, their watch will become their own to take home after demonstrating proficiency.
The results of a simple survey sent home with my students revealed many homes had only digital clocks and no analog clocks!
Children are constantly exposed to a variety of digital devices and can say the time being displayed, but are unable to fully understand what these numbers represent in relationship to time. This time-telling device would significantly help my students in learning to tell time using an analog clock in a primarily digital world.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
