it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In 2018 I took an American sign language course and I loved it. Over my career of teaching I have taught a few deaf students and I was able to communicate some basic things and have some conversations. I still have my notes from when I took the introductory class. I have requested ASL practice books, flash cards, and a workbook so I can continue practicing and improving my ASL. My goal is to take a more advanced sign language class at the city college. There are 4 different levels and I would like to move on to the next class but it has been 6 years since I took the first introductory class and I want to gain some confidence and expand my skill set before taking the next level.
One of the books I requested comes with videos and a downloadable app to practice ASL.
I would use the iPad and Apple Pencil to watch all of the companion videos that go with the ASL books. I would watch the virtual instructor, submit videos of myself signing, and get feedback.
Learning ASL will help me grow professionally because I can communicate with deaf students on campus. Our Unified Sports program has students with disabilities compete in sports and I go watch all of their games. I would love to be able to communicate with deaf and hard of hearing students beyond the hellos and pleasantries. I also added an ASL book for young children because I thought I could use that to teach some of my students some basic signs.
Deaf and hard of hearing students will benefit from my professional development project because I, as a general education teacher, am communicating with them in their language, instead of through an interpreter.
