Learning to Self-regulate With Weighted Items

My Students

My classroom is a collection of significantly diverse learners who each have very special qualities requiring 1:1 to 1:3 instruction in the areas of academics, functional skills, behavioral skills, and social skills. The majority of my students require frequent sensory breaks and lack communication skills needed to express their wants and needs. Noises can be difficult so having a calming environment is beneficial to them and hands-on learning is beneficial.

My classroom consists of 12 wonderfully, energetic students with Autism and I just found out I will have kindergarten and 1st grade online!!

Technology is essential in my classroom and my students will be 1:1 this year with iPads. All of my students come from a low socio-economic background, so they often have difficulties acquiring therapeutic items which help fulfill their sensory needs. More than 50% of the population receives free school lunch.

My Project

This project will provide my students with sensory materials when calming strategies are not enough. The students will be able to make choices on regular lap blankets or fun animals when they are of some extra sensory input. The animals and lap pads range in different weights so the students can choose how much sensory input they need.

The weighted lap blankets, neck snake, and dog/lamb will provide comfort and help my students improve sensory integration, concentration, and attention.

Many of our students have challenges with sensory integration, and the weighted blanket would provide assistance and calm them in times of stress or distress. The weighted blanket is filled with nontoxic pellets and is machine washable. Being machine washable, the weighted therapeutic animal that we are requesting would provide years of comfort to our students. Our students learn best when they are relaxed and not in a stressful state. Many of our students have difficulties with self-regulation. These therapeutic-weighted animals and blankets will allow them to experience comfort in times of stress.
