My students need 2 Reduce, Reuse & Recycle Kits, a set of Energy for the Future Books, a Properties of Earth Activity Tub and a Can Do! Earth Game.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Bencic's classroom raised $387

4th grade is so much more fun, memorable, engaging, and meaningful (for both teachers and students) if the lessons have some type of hands-on aspect to them. You know it's true! All too often students get lost in textbooks and worksheets, so it's important to make lessons fun and interesting as often as possible. That's why I'm here--DonorsChoose makes it possible for me to add some pizazz to my lessons. This is especially helpful when teaching math and science; so here I am planning lessons about our Earth. Recycling and alternative energy sources will be my emphasis. My goal is to inspire my kiddos to start recycling and take care of our planet for future generations. After all, our kids are the key to our future--and Earth's.
Our school is indeed tiny--only 120 students (K-8). But don't let the numbers fool you--we are very serious about education, and our small numbers allow our students benefit from more one-on-one instruction. The school is located in a small, rural, economically disadvantaged community in Middle Tennessee. I have a special interest in this school--I live here, I grew up here, and I truly love this school. Teaching our kids and making our school the best it can possibly be has become a big part of my life.
To add activities to my unit about Earth, I am requesting 4 items:
1. I need two Reduce, Reuse & Recycle Activity Kits. This kit will give students real life experiences they need to have the three "Rs" in their lives. We will even learn to make paper! I also like that we can test cleaners to see which are environmentally safe! I'm asking for two kits so that all my kids can have a chance to work on the experiments.
2. Next, I would like to have a set of books called, "Energy for the Future Book Series." These books will teach about wind and water power as well as hydrogen and fossil fuels. I prepare daily literacy stations for my kiddos, and I plan to use these books for that purpose.
3. The Properties of Earth Activity Tub will allow students to see how fossils are formed, how mountains crumble, how rocks are worn down, and more. I feel it's necessary for students to understand Earth's structure and what forces shape it in order to see the importance of taking care of it.
4. Finally, I would like my students to play the Can Do! Earth Game. This is a fun game that students can play at a Science workstation. It will help build vocabulary and understand Earth's processes.
So there it is! I'm hoping you can help--I appreciate your reading this proposal. Even if you can't help, you value education, and that counts for so much! Please remember these activities, games, and lessons will be used in future classes. I simply want to build environmental awareness! You can help me make a difference in kids...and our Earth!
