My Students

Ever walk down the street and see the child in front of you drop their garbage on the floor without a second glance? This is a learned behavior, and I want to teach my students the right way to dispose of their trash and how to take better care of our earth.

There are 18 energetic three and four-year-old children in my class.

My students and their families come from the West Indies and they are now living in an urban setting. Our school includes over 1,500 students from pre-k to eighth grade. It is a Title I school which means many of the families are living below the poverty line and about 95% of the students in the school receive free school lunch.

My Project

To help teach my pre-kindergarten students about recycling we need two trash bins that will be designated for paper, plastic, metal and trash. We use and disregard a lot of paper in pre-kindergarten and by sorting trash properly on their own regularly, I hope it will become second nature to them. Our class also needs several good books for me to read to them and for them to read to themselves. These books will help build the students' knowledge about recycling and why we need to do it in school and at home. The last thing we are asking for is a case of recycled copy paper to help make sure we aren't using non-recycled paper for homework and notices. This is one more way we can make a difference in our classroom.

Learning how to take care of our classroom, school, community and planet is an important skill for students to have.

Learning how to do it at a young age helps make it a practice they will continue throughout their lifetime.
