Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are an amazing group of enthusiastic and curious learners. Despite the many challenges they face both inside and outside of the school, they do not let obstacles get in their way. They are motivated to learn more about the world around them and it is in the classroom that they deserve the opportunity to do that on an equal playing field.
Students' shared experiences in the classroom are made even more special because of their unique perspectives.
The diversity in my classroom and the school at large is reflective of our unique neighborhood in New York City, and students from all backgrounds unite around a love of learning. We serve a population that includes a number of English Language Learners, students with a variety of abilities, and many students that are living in poverty and have insecure access to food and housing. When they come into school each day excited for what's ahead, I want to ensure that there's nothing standing in their way.
My Project
In our first grade classroom, students are learning that the letters they sing in the ABCs can come to life as an author tells a story or teaches them something new. Many of our students are at the early stages of making these literacy discoveries and are practicing matching the letters they see on the page to the words they speak every day.
With the individual leveled books and the larger big books this project will fund, students will have increased exposure to new vocabulary and new stories, as well as opportunities to explore the joys of reading.
In our classroom, it is crucial that students are able to practice their reading strategies on books that are appropriate for their developmental level. Right now, our library does not have enough of the early level "A" "B" and "C" books for each student to practice with. I am so excited to see my readers grow this year, and hope that with this addition to our classroom, they will have new opportunities that will help them thrive!
