My Students

Do you remember watching your teacher or librarian tell stories with felt pictures, or better yet, puppets?! I sure do, and I want my students to be able to look back at their preschool experience and remember the fun puppets and story telling props.

My students are curious, active, fun, and loving people.

They are in a full day pre-school classroom. They come from a variety of backgrounds. The majority of my students live in low economic, single parent households. They are in my full day classroom while their parents are working or going to school.

My Project

I have a few story telling props and when I read the stories and use the props my students are mesmerized! They sit with their hands to themselves, watching with intent rapture while I use the props and tell the story. When I am finished, they ask me to retell the story over and over again. It could be the middle of the day, and one of students will ask me about a story I read the week before. It is so heart warming to be able to know that they are discovering a love of reading! However, they are not only loving reading, they are learning how to turn the pages one by one, from left to right. They are beginning to understand that print carries a message, they are beginning to track the print, and so much more!!!

My students need storytelling kits!

All students are having to learn more in a smaller amount of time. In my pre-school program I am teaching through hands-on learning experiences. Teaching is so much more effective when students are able to be engaged and active in the learning. With these materials I am requesting, I will be able to tell stories repeatedly. Then my students will remember the stories and begin to tell them on their own, using the props in the storytelling kits.
