Learning to Read Music with Manipulatives

My students need Music Go Round manipulatives to help them learn to read and perform music in our classroom.

My Students

My students are energetic and creative. They love coming to music class twice a week. We're a Title 1 school with many musical opportunities. We have an after-school choir, an after-school world music drumming ensemble, band and orchestra. Almost every grade level performs in a special concert once a year.

Music gives my students a creative outlet during their day.

They are often in the driver's seat of their class. The students decide where to take a lesson and how to improve their musicianship as individuals or as a class. They have opportunities to try new things in a supportive atmosphere and can refine their musicianship in areas they feel they are strong.

My Project

Learning to read music is a critical step to becoming a well-rounded musician. Musical literacy in my classroom begins in kindergarten and continues through fifth grade. Music-Go-Rounds will help my kindergarten students see the beat, my first graders to learn about quarter and eighth notes, and my second through fifth graders to practice reading rhythms. First through fifth grade students will use the solfege Music-Go-Rounds to decode melodies. They can use the Alphadots to create their own melodies to play on our classroom xylophones and recorders.

Music-Go-Rounds will help my students read and write music no matter what level they are at.

We can use these manipulatives as a whole class, in music centers, small groups, and in individual work. Music-Go-Rounds will help my students become music readers and composers and will give them the skills and confidence they need for music class when they go on to middle school.
