Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever been frustrated trying to do something that is very difficult for you? That's an unfortunate feeling that many of my students feel every day.

I work with small groups of students who are struggling to read at the same rate at their classmates.

Every day, I work with small groups of 3-7 students from first through fifth grade and focus on helping them with their biggest hurdles in learning to read and understanding the connections between words and meanings of what is written on the paper. Many of these students suffer from low self-esteem because they are aware that they are not reading as well as their peers. Almost 80% of these students are English Language Learners who really need the extra support that they are unable to receive at home.

My Project

The materials that I am requesting are fun, colorful manipulatives and games that will help excite the students about reading. My students need reading games, language lacers, rhyme sorting boxes, and other fun activities to spark their interest in learning to read! By having items that they perceive as fun and hands-on, they will be eager to come to my classroom and focus on reading. Because many of my students have had such negative experiences with struggling to learn how to read, these games would give them a new enthusiasm for reading. I want my students to learn to love reading and look forward to coming to my classroom and using these materials to become readers. I hope that this will spark a lifelong love of reading in each of my students who have previously only experienced frustration and disappointment. These games and resources would allow my students to have fun with words and begin to appreciate the joy and excitement that can be associated with reading.

This project is important because all students deserve to have a good education with all of the resources that we need.

The majority of students at my school come from homes where there isn't a lot of extra money to be spent on books and educational resources. The materials being requested in this project would help to give my students a boost in their learning.
