My Students
At our school, our students come from all over the world. They each bring their own unique talents and experiences to the classroom and are incredibly excited about learning.
They are full of energy and enthusiasm and are beginning to come together to support one another!
They are passionate and love learning! As we read stories, they are constantly examining the illustrations and making observations that they are eager to share with one another. They are always asking questions, wondering why things work the way they do, or how things come about. They love working together with one another and encouraging each other to become leaders!
My Project
Third grade is a transformational year for many students. All across Philadelphia students make the shift from learning to read, to reading to learn. Not only that, but their skills are put to the test as they take standardized test after standardized test! Their brains are bogged down by the monotony of bubbling in, or clicking through answer after answer. In many ways, they are robbed from the joy of learning, but that's not what learning should be.
Each and every student deserves to be excited about what they are learning, rather than bored by the bubbles and multiple choice questions; we want our students to love reading and learning.
As our class helped set up the library this year we engaged in conversation about what books they wanted to read. We then did a survey to figure out which books they were most looking forward to reading, and that data was used to drive this DonorsChoose project. Every single one of our kids said they wanted to read more Fly Guy and more Ricky Ricotta books! Nearly all of our students said they wanted to read more Ordinary People and Zoey and Sassafras books! When our kids have high interest books on their level in their hands are they incredibly engaged! Not only do they read for pleasure, but they read to learn, and love sharing what they learn with others! Having these books will allow us to continue to engage our students, and help them practice those skills that they'll need as they face standardized testing!
They know that their goal is to prepare themselves for fourth grade, high school and college and that by engaging in these books they can overcome the boredom of test-taking to prepare for life ahead!
