My Project
The students in our classroom range in age from three to six. A large part of our science lessons are either learning about life cycles of plants and animals and/or parts of plants and animals. At this age children are enthralled with puzzles. Because of their enchantment, I love combining science lessons with puzzles that reinforce the lesson. The January lesson is on fish. This means, I teach them about fish, then show them the puzzle. I explain each part of the fish’s body on the puzzle. Then I place the puzzle out on the shelf for the students to work with when they choose. The younger students take the puzzle apart and put it back together naming each piece. The older students will trace the puzzle onto paper labeling each piece. This combines the science lesson with fine motor processes, reading, and writing.
When children are engaged in completing the puzzle, they are engaged in learning.
In a Montessori environment, we care about the whole child, bringing nature into the learning environment, and using hands on experiences to attract children and keep them engaged in learning. These puzzles will not only help the students currently in the classroom but for many years to come.
