My students need 20 copies of "Black Beauty" for our Equine Science class. This will give them the opportunity to read something enjoyable while practicing essential skills!

My Students
For some students, reading is a chore. They have not yet found the joy in opening a book and getting lost in the story! I would like to present my students with this opportunity in my Equine Science class this year by reading the book "Black Beauty". Reading this book at their own pace will help them build confidence in their own abilities.
I teach at a Title 1 school deep in the state of Texas.
Our school struggles to make ends meet in a community that struggles to survive. Over 75% of my students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, and more are at risk of not graduating. Many of my students face struggles at home that few people can imagine. Poverty, abuse, or adult situations are a few examples of the struggles they face.
School is often a place for them to escape, but school work is rarely a priority. As a teacher, it is my goal to not only provide a safe place for students to come, but to also provide them the tools to escape from impoverish conditions.
My Project
Reading is a skill that many of us take for granted. I remember reading books when I was younger and getting lost in a new world of imagination. Many of my students have never even owned a book of their own, and the text books that are provided by the school are less than inspiring. I dream of giving my students the skills they need to escape into a book.
In my Equine Science class, I want to introduce my students to the world of Horses on a different level, by using 20 copies of Anna Sewell's book "Black Beauty". I will allow students to read at their own pace, and introduce thought provoking discussions, as opposed to forcing them to analyze on paper. I would also like for them to relate some of their own experiences to the experiences of the animals portrayed in the book, to help to teach compassion.
My students need resources.
They need outlets to worlds beyond their own. They also need to fall in love with reading in a way that will help them build their skills. Presenting them with literature in a way that is different than what is traditionally done in their English classes could be beneficial to building their skill sets.
