My students need The Recess Queen, Hey, Little Ant, and 21 other books to learn reading comprehension skills and strategies to help them not only become strong readers but love reading as well.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the thrill of sitting in kindergarten and hearing that it was story time? In my classroom story time is the favorite of many students. I want the students to love reading and be strong readers. My biggest challenge is getting books the students can connect with.
The students in my room are a bunch of wide-eyed, enthusiastic little people, who love to hear stories.
The students come to school many days hungry, tired and worried about things they should not even know about, but they are at school and want to learn. Our school has a small staff who works hard and a principal and vice principal who are very supportive. We have a wonderful office staff and very generous parents. The resources at our school are small but our dreams are big!
My Project
With this wonderful set of books my students will be taken to far off places they may otherwise never see. They will gain a love of reading and learn some very important skills to make them strong readers. We will be using these books to retell important events in a story with partners, they will find the characters, setting, problem and solution in each book. The books will be read to the students at the start of each week and then be out for students to use when lessons are taught to find the information they need.
These books will create a print rich environment that will support many reading comprehension skills and strategies all students will need to be fantastic readers in school and life.
If they love to read and learn while they are young, everything down the road will be so much easier.
