My Students

My students face many challenges in their lives, reading below grade level shouldn't be one of them. One of the struggles my students face is that there is not enough high quality, high interest materials available to them. Our materials are outdated and, honestly, boring for the students.

We are a Title I school, located in an urban area.

Our school is one of the few schools in our district that is not a neighborhood school. My students are bused in from around the area, many from impoverished areas. We offer many of our students the only stability in their lives. We strive to assist our students not only in their academic abilities, but in their personal and social lives as well. Many of the teachers, myself included, conduct home visits to get to know our students and their families on a deeper level. This year I was fortunate enough to "loop" with my students from third grade into fourth grade. It has been exciting to watch them grow and blossom into young learners. This also offered us the unique opportunity to begin the new learning the very first day of school. My students treat each other like family members and encourage each other to reach their goals.

My Project

Since many of my students struggle to read at grade level, I try to find high interest reading material that will also meet the skills they need to learn; main idea, inference, theme, vocabulary. The materials I am asking for are high interest fiction and non-fiction text that gradually increase in difficulty. The materials include a set with newspaper and magazine articles with incredible photos, a vocabulary building set, reading activity cards at multiple skill levels, and a reading intervention set to increase comprehension. These materials will allow me to differentiate instruction and met the needs of all my students. The sets also allow for independent learning and practice. This will enable me to work with students in a small group setting and create fun and exciting intervention lessons for my struggling readers.

By making a donation to this project, my students will have the opportunity to practice and enhance their reading skills.

They will gain confidence as readers. I believe when students are confident readers, they develop a true love of reading! These materials will improve my classroom by offering my students interesting and current materials to read. They will be engaged and fall in love with their own reading!
