My school is in a low-income, urban neighborhood in the Bronx, New York. One hundred percent of our students are eligible for free lunch and our school also provides free breakfast each morning.
Nelson Mandela said, "Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world." I want each of my students to know that they are important and that they can achieve anything if they put their minds to it and work hard.
This being said, in order for them to succeed, they need the proper tools to do so.
My first grade class is comprised of a mixture of general education and special needs students. Many of my students are struggling learners with limited parental involvement, while others have challenges that no child should have to face at such a young age. Despite these individual challenges, they all come to school each day, excited and eager to learn. It is my job to assist and encourage my students to be the best they can be despite the many challenges they face.
My Project
When I was a child I loved reading! I often looked forward to going to the library or bookstore to get the next, new book by my favorite author. Unfortunately for many of my students, this does not happen for them.
Imagine how frustrating it would be if you did not have access to the tools you needed or wanted in order to succeed.
Most of the students in my class are struggling readers and read below grade level. At home, books are scarce and many do not utilize the local library. This leaves my students very few opportunities to read books that they can choose on their own or which they can read independently when away from school.
Each one of my students is extremely eager to learn! The books selected are based on authors that we have enjoyed listening to in class as well as a variety of reading levels to meet their individual needs. My goal is for my students to develop a love of reading by reading books that they enjoy and make them excited to read more!!!
