Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Some of the students I teach are newcomers to the U.S. and the English language. Eager to learn, my students are usually animated, positive and hardworking. They have a wide variety of languages: Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Arabic, and Pashto. They also have various levels of experience with and skill in English. However, as they are learning English, they need access to important academic skills in literature and writing. This is where my class comes in.
You might ask, why would you get materials in their native language if your students are learning English?
The main purpose of my class is not to teach them English (they have another class for that), my class goal is to teach them reading and writing skills in general. Imagine trying to learn how to use a new technology, but the directions are in a language in which you have little knowledge. How frustrated would you become? How well would you learn your new skill? Although most of my instruction is in English, I try to give students materials in their own language where it helps them to learn the concepts I am teaching. The best gift I can give my students is the love of reading, and that's what this project is designed to do.
