My Students
I teach English Language Arts to 36 Special Education students in grades 6-8. My school is a Title I school in need of improvement, with 95% of the students falling below the poverty level. We are a Pre-K-8 school in Brooklyn, NY.
The students have limited resources at home.
Most of my students are at a wide variety of levels and many read below to far below grade level standards, however this does not stop them from wanting to come to school each day ready to learn. I have been teaching here for over 16 years and I am always looking for new ways to ignite and create a passion in students to learn. I can think of no better way to get the students excited and passionate about reading then through graphic novels.
My Project
It is very important for children to grow up within an environment that promotes a positive rapport toward reading. These graphic novels would enable me to reach reluctant readers.
These visually stimulating stories afford students with an opportunity to understand the sequence of events, interpret characters’ nonverbal gestures, the plot of a story and make inferences.
Through graphic novels, my students would be to develop inferencing and literary skills that apply when interacting with photos, paintings, and other people. Most importantly these stimulating stories create a gateway to a deeper understanding of a text.
The variety of selected graphic novels would certainly pique the interest of my students and support or daily reading routines. We read daily for at least 20 minutes throughout the school day and students are required to read for at least 20 minutes for homework. These graphic novels will allow them to select a book that interests them and increases their chances of actually reading a book in its entirety. This project is a great way to help my students grow stronger in reading and develop a passion to read all genres.
