This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the excitement on the days you got to use math manipulatives in the classroom? I sure do! Using manipulatives makes learning seem like play, which is exactly what it should be like for first graders. I want to provide the same excitement and fun through math for my students.
This is my first year teaching and my first year at this school.
I know that there are many English Language Learners and low income students at our school. I want to provide the best learning environment for my students, and as a brand new teacher, I don't have the funding for all the supplies I need to create amazing math lessons. I haven't met my new class yet, but I know they will benefit greatly from these math manipulatives and have a blast with them!
My Project
These math manipulatives will be so engaging for students! First graders are in a developmental phase of exploration and inquiry. They have short attention spans and need to be actively engaged in their work. All of the manipulatives I have chosen directly relate to the common core. These will be incredible resources for students to use when learning about place value, geometry, measuring, addition, and subtraction.
We will be using these manipulatives during whole class instruction and math groups. I want students to have the chance to explore the topics that we are learning by utilizing hands-on activities, these items would make a huge difference in student understanding and interest in math! I want my students to love math!
We use math everyday.
It is so important to start cultivating a positive attitude about math early on. Math manipulatives will increase student interest and understanding and give them a positive outlook on math.
