My Project
My students come in every day raring and ready to go! Our day always begins with several hugs and exciting news that they have to share with me. To be surrounded by children who love you despite your flaws, can't wait to see you every day, and think you hung the moon, is the greatest gift in the world!
The majority of my students come from high poverty homes and many don't have Internet access at home.
It is not uncommon for students to come to second grade on a first grade level. Because of this, it seems that we are playing catch up for most of the year. Luckily, I teach in a wonderful school where teachers are willing to share resources and do whatever it takes to help students achieve success. Although many of my students are facing various challenges including broken homes, being raised by grandparents, and high poverty, they are very motivated learners.
Learning to play cooperatively with others is a lesson that most children and many adults for that matter, need to work on. Being able to verbally express your ideas, while listening to others' ideas is harder than it seems and often leads to disagreements in the classroom.
My students have limited toys to play with during inside recess.
The items I am requesting, Magna-Tiles and Legos, will have a dual benefit in the classroom. Not only will they provide some much needed entertainment on rainy days, but more importantly, they will allow my students the opportunity to practice tolerance for their classmates. Playing alongside others who have different backgrounds, opinions, and social skills is hands-on tolerance teaching at its best!
