Learning to Listen Using an iPad!

My Project

Students who are deaf and utilize cochlear implants to hear face unique challenges in the school setting. Unlike glasses, when a deaf child gets a cochlear implant, they don't automatically hear sounds and understand what they are hearing. It takes years of hard work to listen and identify what they are hearing with this new technology. This can be especially hard when young children are also trying to learn, through "hearing" in a general education classroom.

I teach deaf children how to listen!

I am an itinerant teacher for the deaf and hard of hearing. I work in district schools with deaf students from age 3-22. I do not have a classroom. I travel from class to class, school to school, supporting deaf students to help them learn language, listening, self-advocacy, hearing technology care, and sign language. Most of my students are in general education classes where they are the only student with a hearing loss. Most of the time they are the only deaf student in the entire school. Many of my students also have more than one disability, such as visual impairment or intellectual disability.

I would like an iPad because I do not have access to technology when I work with my students since I travel from school to school. My home office is the trunk of my car. I need an iPad to bring sound, in the form of music, games, activities and apps to help my students learn to use their hearing via their cochlear implant. Better hearing, better academics and better social skills!
