Gardening each day keeps boredom at bay. Looking into the faces of these young 9 year-old children, and the excitement and learning our beginning garden has provided would amaze you! They have been able to learn math, science and use writing in a meaningful way, and it is incredible!
Our school is a small public school that was just awarded the California Distinguished Award for our partnership with the community and implementing good intervention strategies to help those students in need.
We have many students from many different countries around the world, with varied life experiences. Being small is an advantage, as all the students know each other well, work together, and take care of each other. Parents help in the classroom and the community spirit flourishes. Students share with one another and teach each other. Most have never planted a seed except in a classroom. My students have never grown vegetables, transplanted them, raised worms, propagated plants, or eaten what they have grown! It is time to change that!
My Project
My students will wear these gloves while they are gardening, to protect their hands. They will use the tools to weed, plant, and transplant smaller plants to a bigger garden on campus. They will grow plants, herbs, flowers, succulents, and vegetables in the vertical gardens that will hang on the chain-link fence just outside our classroom. These hanging, vertical gardens will give the students privacy from the street and help keep down the noise and dust as they work and learn outside. They will be able to sit and enjoy the space, surrounded by what they have grown. Our classroom will be able to truly extend to the outside world.
My students work and learn at a school in a big city.
Most of them live in apartments without the opportunity to garden. We have started a small garden outside the classroom and would love to expand it by adding vertical gardens to hang on the fence. We would love to have enough supplies so the students can all work at the same time. They are so excited and are learning an incredible amount as I connect science, math, and writing to everything we do outside. Help our garden grow!
