Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Bill Gates once said, "Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important." Although it is just a tool, it's my ability to teach the tool that will make their learning and working together even more powerful.

I have been teaching English at an inner-city high school for the last eight years and am deeply committed to my work with the students.

I thoroughly enjoy working with the youth to help them develop not only their English Language Skills, but also develop their life skills like communication and organization. I know that they have to be well-rounded to remain competitive in the "real world". In the last eight years, I have taught every English grade level, AVID, theater and study skills. The last few years have been dedicated to teaching twelfth grade English. My units vary from global issues, reading plays and analyzing world poetry, but since it is twelfth grade, I strive to ensure all units work towards helping my students achieve college and career readiness. This requires me to stay up-to-date with information regarding college reading and writing, college requirements and 21st century skills like technology.

My Project

I am requesting to attend three online technology courses. The first is a course geared towards learning how to utilize Google applications. In this day and age, my students are submitting documents and asking questions about the assignments online through my email. Since Google seems to be the best free, accessible and popular platform, it would benefit me to learn to best use the system effectively to connect with all school stakeholders: students, parents and other teachers. The second technology course is geared towards learning how utilize Microsoft's Excel program. Since I am constantly trying to improve my practice as an educator, it would benefit me to learn how to collect and organize data through a well-known system like Excel. I can also use this information to teach my students when they engage in our yearly community research projects. The last course focuses on equipping students with 21st Century technology skills for college and career readiness.

These courses will improve my ability to teach the students the skills they need to survive past senior year: communication, organization and technology.

They will be attending competitive universities and be obtaining professional internships and the knowledge I gain will help them succeed. Like Bill Gates once said, "the teacher is the most important", and I want to be the best technologically-competent teacher for them.
