I teach deaf and hard of hearing middle schoolers in a functional skills settings. They all use sign language to communicate with others. They come from all over the city of Memphis. They need to learn things to make them independent in their home and community. Due to their language levels being low because they can not hear, I have to be creative with how I teach them vocabulary. One student is in a wheelchair with fine motor issues. Cooking will help him greatly.
My Project
We will be able to learn how to cook on a weekly basis using these items I have requested. We will be able to practice reading recipes and following directions. My students will develop their vocabulary and their independent living skills with learning how to cook.
I have requested cooking appliances that we can use in the classroom.
This weekly practice will help not only their vocabulary but also self confidence as they assert responsibility at home.
