This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in our classroom starts with students being picked up using a school-provided vans. Students complete daily chores and then disburse out into the community for such activities as workouts and vocational experiences. Lunch is prepared.

My program serves students age 18-22 years old with moderate intellectual disabilities.

Students work within the community to gain vocational skills and build a sense of citizenship among their fellow community members. They shop for groceries to prepare lunch meals and workout at the local gym. We have a raised bed garden at the school facility which we plant, maintain and enjoy produce from year-round.

My Project

Students sit down together with staff once a week to outline the week's meals. They compile recipes, create grocery lists and then go to the store to purchase necessary items for the meals. Each day we divide out the duties and students prepare items to contribute to the group meal at lunch. They learn measurements, differences between cookware, bakeware and utensils. My students need a large food processor in order to learn how to create multi-step moderately difficult meals as part of our special education home living skills lessons. This food processor will teach them how to chop food properly.

We currently use a very basic 8-cup food processor to do all of our chopping to prepare 10-serving meals.

This makes the process very long because we have to split the ingredients out to do smaller quantity prep work. Having an 11-cup chopper would serve as our primary chopper and the smaller one as our secondary.
