My Students
My students are showing a huge interest in other people, cultures, civil rights, and diversities. I would like to enable their curiosity about the diverse world we all live in, knowing the more they are educated about others, the more acceptance and empathy they will, also, learn and show.
My middle school students are Oglala Lakota(Sioux)Native Americans living on one of the reservations in South Dakota.
They enjoy pow wows and other cultural traditions. I am discovering how much they also enjoy learning about other people in our multicultural world. Unfortunately, we are low in multicultural materials. I would like to add more materials in this area. I feel like it is extremely important, especially with the students showing so much curiosity about multicultural topics at this point.
My Project
Since my educational role includes teaching my own music and art classes, I would like to expand my lessons to include more multicultural music and multicultural art. Music and art seems to be the door that helps connect us all. Also, in my writing classes, I plan to include studying more civil rights issues, along with more diversity lessons, and presentations about the acceptance of others. I want to present these lessons to my students in order to give them the opportunities to learn and write about others, and let them express their own opinions about what they learn. I am requesting 2 CD's, several Civil Rights DVD's, and 16 multi-cultural books.

I see this as a great opportunity to, also, let them learn about empathy and gaining acceptance of others.
