Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My school is a public magnet high school in an urban setting. Its focus is public service including government, law, and law enforcement. The student body is over 60% free or reduced lunch program. The class for which this proposal is written is a tenth grade law class learning about the rule of law in our country and how citizens make a difference by becoming active with their government. To better achieve that goal I take students to Washington, D.C. and Williamsburg, Virginia the week after Thanksgiving each year on a program operated by the Close Up Foundation, a non partisan citizenship education organization (closeup.org). I am dedicated to the belief that if we want young people to become active citizens who participate in our democracy, if we truly want to preserve our democratic ideals "to ourselves and our posterity", then we must teach our youth the skills of democratic citizenship. The Close Up Foundation program fits this proposition like a glove. Students experience an insider's look at how government works and how citizens participate. This cultivates in them the belief that an individual can make a difference. Students engage in small group face to face experiences with members of Congress, agency and department officials, the Washington news media, foreign officials, and think tank representatives. They participate in seminars led by government officials, debates on relevant issues, workshops designed to develop a sense of citizenship, and on sight visits to the places where government occurs like capitol hill, members offices, and historical locations. They spend 24 hours in colonial Williamsburg, Va. studying the roots of democracy and the intent of the founders. The week long experience includes all transportation, lodging, meals and admissions. Many students raise enough to cover their cost. Many are unable to do so. I am seeking a grant to fund one student. For many students, this experience has been life changing. One now works in the Commerce Dpt., one in the Justice Dpt., one has run for Congress. More importantly, most are now voting members of society taking an interest in their country, how it is being run and trying to make a difference.
