This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We have an ethnically diverse school with 43% English Language learner population. 72% of our students receive free or reduced-rate meals at school. As a school counselor I strive to ensure all students enjoy coming to school and feel connected to our school. We have students who lack the skills of maintaining positive relationships due to various factors ( limited positive role models , early trauma , poor social skills, etc). Our school focus is not only academic achievement but the importance of character . We strive to teach and model kindness.
My Project
The book Wonder would be a great book to use to help students began to understand the importance of empathy, kindness and most importantly openness. We all are different in many ways. It is important for our students to learn to embrace differences by understanding and showing kindness to others. My hope is to create that by facilitating a book club with the many students I serve who have difficulties maintaining positive relationships. To be able to be empathic to those that may be different from us whether it be by race, special needs , and or socio-economic status. To learn at our core we are all the same . We are caring humans.
