Learning to Be Environmental Change-Makers

Help me give my students books to build an understanding of their role as changemakers to help the environment and battle climate change.

FULLY FUNDED! Dr. Pat's classroom raised $1,805

My Students

My 5th graders are a diverse group of students who reside in Oakland, California and other nearby East Bay cities in Alameda County. Like many California public schools, we are underfunded and under-resourced. My students do not have access to a school library and have limited access to technology. Therefore, I often need to buy books with my own limited budget or my own money.

My fifth graders learn both Mandarin Chinese and English in a public school that just won the national Blue Ribbon schools award.

My Project

To support our science learning about ecosystems and climate change, students will read these books about diverse individuals who are heroic environmental change makers. They will also take the book home and read it with their families to better understand how everyone's actions matter. Then, they will conduct their own changemaker project in our Oakland community.

We want to inspire our students to act locally to support actions that will reduce climate change.

Possible projects include planting in our school garden and creating a compost bin or cleaning up at our shoreline or nearby creeks.
