This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Please help provide admission and transportation for my class to visit a teaching zoo where they can learn about the diversity of our planet's animals and see some of them close-up.
Many of my group of transitional kindergarten children have never been to a zoo.
The closest they have come to seeing animals is the pet store at the mall!
We will soon begin an animal study unit. Our state standards require that they learn about different types of animals, such as fish, birds, reptiles and mammals, as well as their structures like wings and legs. I can think of no better way for my students to understand these concepts than for them to visit a zoo.
My students attend a high-poverty, Title I school, and many of them live below the poverty level themselves. They are a diverse group culturally, linguistically and developmentally. Some of them are learning English for the first time, and some of them have special needs that require accommodations to the typical school experience. A field trip such as this would be an experience they will long remember.
My Project
Many of our planet's animals are threatened due to loss of habit, over hunting by humans, and pollution of the environment. To help my students learn about the diversity of animal life on our planet and about the importance of taking care of the environment so that we can protect animal habitats, I have chosen to take them on a trip to America's Teaching Zoo.
This zoo is operated by college students of the Exotic Animal Training and Management Program. As a part of their training, they put on animal shows for visitors. At these animal shows, children are taught many things about animals, such as what they eat, where they come from, and other interesting information. The children get to see these animals while they are listening to the trainers talk about them. They will also learn about the threats these animals face due to pollution and loss of habitat. After the program, we will get to visit the rest of the facility and view the wide variety of animals living there.
Your donation will help to provide admission and transportation that a great group of students will use to visit the zoo.
Through the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation: Teach for the Planet and your help, our students will learn to appreciate the wonderful animal life of our planet!
